Which Fabric Should I Chose for My Bow Tie?

Which Fabric Should I Chose for My Bow Tie?

The choice of fabric for your bow tie is just as important as the shape or the colour.

SILK

Silk is the classic fabric for a bow tie. It gives a tight knot and pairs wonderfully with the satin lapels on a tuxedo. It is soft with a sheen that exudes a sense of occasion and therefore is perfect for Black Tie events, weddings and the like.

COTTON

In the summer / spring months, cotton is an ideal choice. There is an enormous variety with cotton bow ties such as seeksucker, gingham and poly-cottons. Cotton allows the bow tie to be tied with a slightly larger knot and the bow tie will tend to keep its shape for longer given it is less flimsy than silk. Cotton bow ties look incredible with tweed blazers, chinos, cardigans and any less formal looks.

VELVET

Velvet bow ties are making a come back, especially in over-sized bow ties. Like the silk tie, a velvet bow tie is for a more formal occasion such as a prom, Christmas work parties and award nights. Velvet from silk is rare and expensive and so most velvet bow ties are actually made from cotton. It has a soft and flexible drape and ties with a large know making it perfect for over-sized bows.

WOOL / TWEED

Wool, tartan and tweed bow ties are very popular and give a warm, deep, modern look. They are durable and hold their shape very well and are a great all-rounder. Wool and tweed bow ties come in a huge variety or colours and knit such as Donegal Tweed, Harris Tweed, cashmere, grandine etc. They look perfect with textured blazers, heavy wool jumpers or even denim jackets. This type of bow tie would be perfect if you wish to have an outdoor, more relaxed wedding.

LINEN

Linen is a wonderful alternative to wool. It's natural, lightweight, breathable and ties a bow tie with definition and holds its shape superbly. A linen bow tie is a great choice for a casual summer layabout day with a glass of Pimms with friends.

There is a great number of fabric choices for bow ties and you should experiment with them all. Let the season and the plan for the day guide your choice and ensure your collection is as varied to suit your needs as it can be.
